September 30th- October 3rd

Monday:

Math: Today in math we worked with our partners playing the game "match it." One player would select a number of shapes and put them on their side of the sorting mat and then they would say "match it" and their partner would have to put the same amount on their side.  We had a lot of fun today in math!  We then worked on our practice sheet.

Writer's Workshop: Today we worked on a friend's special name book.

WE HAD MUSIC TODAY!

Reading/Phonics:  Today we learned about the letter Ii and the sound it makes.  We read the Alphatales story Iguana on Ice.

We brainstormed I words and then worked on our letter I poem.  Today we were introduced to our whole group reading time where we talked about main idea and supporting details.  We practiced finding the main idea in a poster and talked about the supporting details.  We also learned that WE ALL ARE READERS!!!  There are 3 ways to read a book.

1. read the words 2. read the pictures and 3. retell a story.  It took some convincing for them to be able to tell me that they can read! :)

Social Studies: Time for Kids- today we talked about farms and where our food comes from.  We watched a short video of a small family farm and the work they do to grow the foods we eat.

WE HAD LIBRARY TODAY!!  Remember to return books on Fridays or Mondays.

Tuesday:

Math: We worked with our partners again today and played match up.  This time we were able to use more shapes and make the matching a little tougher.  Ex.  3 green triangles and 2 yellow hexagons.  We did a great job matching!  Ask your child to tell you their shapes.  Ask them what a rhombus is! :)

Writing: We had another friend's special name book today.

WE HAD PHY ED TODAY!

Reading/Phonics: Today was our day 2 learning of the letter Ii. We also learned the word "to."  We played a game called "cat and mouse" that we LOVED!!!

Ask your child about it!  We worked on our "to" worksheet.  We worked more on finding main idea and also learned the first part of Daily 5, READ TO SELF!!  We all got a book box and our "reading spot" and practiced reading to ourselves.  We learned the rules of Read to self:
1. Read quietly
2. Read the whole time
3. Stay in one spot
4. Take care of your books

We starting building our stamina today.  Our goal is to be able to read to self quietly for 10 minutes and today we were able to read for 1 and a half minutes.  We will continue this all week!

Wednesday:

Math: Today in math we learned a new math roll and record game.  We also got new calendar pages in our calendar binders for October.  We added a few new things for the month of October including counting pennies and number writing.

S.M.A.R.T. room:  Each month we switch up the stations and get new partners.  We LOVE the new "Halloween" themed stations.  Our favorites are the flashlight chase and monster eye surgery ones.  Ask your child to explain! :)

STORYBOOK READER TODAY!! Today our storybook reader read the book  "Just About Perfect".  She even showed us her "dinosaur dance moves."

Writing: We worked on another name book today.

WE HAD MUSIC TODAY!

Reading/phonics: Today we learned about the letter Jj and the sound it makes.  We read the Alphatales book Jaguar's Jungleberry Jamboree
and brainstormed Jj words.  We also worked on our letter poems.  We talked and practiced main idea and then worked on building our reading stamina.  Today we made it to 4 MINUTES!!!  Wow, nice work Kindergartners!!!  We will be at 10 before you know it!!!  When we make it to 10 minutes we will learn about another part of Daily 5, Work on writing.

Thursday:

Character Education:  Mrs. Weninger came in today and talked about the blue zone.  We talked about how you might be in the blue zone if you are feeling tired, sick, bored, sleepy, etc.  We then talked about ideas as to how we can get back into the green zone.  We could take a rest, drink of water, band aid, etc.  She said that sometimes we might not feel really well but still come to school but even though we are in the blue zone we need to try to get to the green zone.  The kids are really starting to understand the zones and what it means to be in each one.  We stress that it is OK to be in one of the other zones but at school we want to be in the green zone.

Math:  Today we worked with our partners again and played match it again but this time we had to pick a number and then build that number with cubes.  We then said "match it" and our partners had to make a cube tower with the same number.  Doing this really helps to build number sense.  "What does 5 really mean?"  Some kids haven't learned yet that 5 is actually 5 things, not just a written number.  By spending so much time and practice on these match it games, we are building a strong number sense so that as we move on to more challenging math tasks, it will make more sense.

Writing: More name books, we are ALMOST done!!!!

WE HAD PHY ED TODAY!

Reading/Phonics: We played a rhyming game today called, "I'm going to the store and I'm going to buy...."  The kids have to say two things that rhyme.  For example, "I'm going to the store and I'm going to buy a frog and a log.  Today was day 2 of the letter Jj.  We played an interactive game on the smart board and learned the song "letter pop."  It goes to the tune "lollipop".  We then played our own version of the song with our own "lollipops" with letters on them.  Today we learned about the word "it" and played a few rounds of cat and mouse.  We then worked on our it practice sheet.  We also worked on building our stamina and got to 8 MINUTES TODAY!!!  They got to see my happy dance!

Friday:

Math:  Today we played match it again with our partners and each took turns building number towers.  Today we used the numbers 0-10.  We love working with our partners.  When we got done with our practice sheet we had time to practice writing our numbers on our whiteboards.  Ask your child to show you how to write the numbers 4 and 5.  We have really been working hard on those.

Technology:  We had technology today with Ms. Casebolt.  We practiced getting onto the website and finding the "thisissand" website.  If you go to the maple lake schools home page www.maplelake.k12.mn.us your child can show you how to get there.  We are getting really good at this!  We've been working on our different clicks : click, double click and click and drag.

Writing: We ran out of time today for writing so we had our friends Emily and Reese read us a story today.  Nice reading girls, we are proud of you!

WE HAD MUSIC TODAY!!

Reading/phonics: Today was our review day of the letters I and J and all we have learned so far.  We also reviewed all of our sight words today by playing an interactive basketball game on the smart board.  We LOVED this!!  We also played a letter sound game on the smart board.  It was a "crane" game where they had to choose the correct picture that started with a specific letter.  We had so much fun!  We will be playing this one again!! :)

A PEEK AT NEXT WEEK:

Next week is Fire safety week so we will be doing projects related to fire safety.  We will be learning about "911" and how to stop, drop and roll.  Wednesday is our field trip to the fire station.  Forecast looks good so far.  We will be going rain or shine so dress appropriately.  Thanks to those who can volunteer!  Make sure that if you were not able to come to volunteer orientation to call the office at 963-3024 before Wednesday to get your training done before we go.  Thanks again!!

We will be learning the words an and in.  We will be working on the letters Kk and Ll.  We will be starting our writing workshop and will hopefully be learning more of our daily 5 stations.

WISH LIST:  If anyone has any old iPods laying around or is selling some for cheap, please let me know.  I'm hoping to get my books on cd put on to iPods for the kids to use during "listen to a story."  My cd's and cd players have seen better days.  :)
