Friday, October 24th


Math: We learned some new vocabulary today.  We learned some positional words including above, below, next to, beside, in front of and behind.  We practiced these words by play a "simon says" game.  The students worked with their partners and then we did a whole group listening activity.  

WE HAD TECHNOLOGY TODAY:  
Today we practiced getting to the internet and went to star fall.

WE HAD MUSIC TODAY

Reading/Phonics:  Today was a review day.  We played a rhyming game and reviewed the letters we have learned so far.  We played an interactive beginning sounds game on the smart board.  

Daily 5:  Today was the first day we started Daily 5 with some kids doing read to self while the other group did work on writing.  Then we switched.  We did such a great job today for Daily 5!  Way to go! I was able to start a few reading groups so start watching for a book bag coming home.  



Art:  Today for art was Q-tip pumpkin painting.  These will be decorating the halls for the fall season. :)

Thursday, October 23rd

Character Ed:  Today Mrs. Weninger brought in some "tools" that she uses for kids who need help getting back into the green zone.  We talked about things we already do in our classroom and learned some new ways too.  We wrote these great tools in our "toolbox."  Mrs. Weninger showed us one of her favorite tools called a "breathing ball."  She let a few of us try it out and she talked to us about how breathing can help us get back into the green zone.


Math:  Today for math we did an activity with our names.  We put our names in a ten-frame and talked about how many letters were in our names. 

We had our hearing screening today. 

WE HAD PHY ED TODAY!


Reading/Phonics:  Today was day 2 of letter Oo.  We met a new puppet today named Ralphie.  He helped us with our ABC chart.  We reviewed the letters we have learned and played a snap word game called "hangman."

Handwriting:  Today we learned the letter B. 

Fine Motor activity:  Today we used a push pin to poke holes into a pumpkin sheet.  When we are all done and hold them up to the light, it looks just like a pumpkin.  This is a great way to build and strengthen the muscles in our hands.  We really enjoyed this activity!










Wednesday, October 22nd


Student Readers:  We had some 2nd grade student readers come and read to our class today!  Great job girls!

We had a fire drill this morning...

Math:Today for math we reviewed all the shapes and the number of sides and corners they have.  We also talked about how a square is a rectangle because it has 4 sides and 4 corners but it is a special rectangle because all 4 sides are the same size.  

Writer's Workshop:  We had time to write in our journals today.  We practiced using our kindergarten "brave spelling."  I am seeing great progress!!  
IDEA:  Have your child write or draw and label in a journal each day about something they did in school.  This would be a great keepsake! :)

Reading/Phonics:  Today we learned about the letter Oo and the sound it makes.  We read the Alphatales book Olive the Octopus's Day of Juggling and worked on our letter poems.  We brainstormed words that start with the letter O and listened to a fun song filled with letter O's.  

Fun Packets:  Today we learned about our fun packets.  These are packets of worksheets and practice pages that I put together at each child's learning level.  When they finish up an activity and others are still working, they take these out and work on them.  I added math sheets, phonics, writing and also just some fun coloring and dot to dot pages.  We loved them!! 






Daily 5: We worked on building our stamina with work on writing again today.  We are really doing a great job and will be ready to add all 5 parts of daily 5 by next week.  Way to go Kindergartners!

Whole group reading:  We talked about what good readers do and how they ask themselves questions as they are reading.  We practiced doing this with the story Click Clack Boo.    




Tuesday, October 21st

Math:  Today for math Mrs. Haglin came in to talk about our iPad cart.  Every Tuesday for Math will be iPad Math day.  We will working on an app called Splash Math.  This app keeps track of the student's progress and also challenges them to their level.  Every Tuesday we will be working on the iPads.  Today we practiced finding our number on the iPad and practiced turning them off and putting them back when we are done.  We are VERY excited to start next Tuesday.




Writer's Workshop: Today we practiced sharing connections with our turn and talk partners.  We listened to the story Wolf  and talked about connections we had.  Then we practiced writing these connections in our journals.


WE HAD PHY ED TODAY!

Reading/Phonics: Today was our day 2 of the letter Nn.  We reviewed all the letters we have learned and played a new game called "letters on the bus."  We also worked on the word "do".  We played cat and mouse to review all of the snap words we have learned.  We also talked about finding the main idea in a story.  

Daily 5: We practiced work on writing again today.  We talked about what we could write about in our notebooks.  We can write our names, letters, words, numbers or even draw pictures and label them.  

We read a few new books we got from the book fair today.  A big thank you to the families who purchased books for our classroom, that was very much appreciated!!


Monday, October 20th

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...ALEX!!

Morning Meeting: We learned a new greeting for this week called "cool cat!"  Ask your child to sing it! :)

Math:  Today for math we worked with geoboards making shapes with our partners.








WE HAD STORYBOOK READER TODAY! Mrs. Mavencamp read the story Monster Mash.


Writer's Workshop:  We got our new journals today and practiced talking and listening with our "turn and talk" partners.  We talked about what it looks like to listen to your partner.  Your eyes should be looking at them, your knees facing their knees and your voice is not interrupting.  We did a great job today.  Today we discussed what we could write about for our first journal entry.

Reading/Phonics: Today we learned the letter Nn and the sound it makes.  We read the Alphatales story The Nicest Newt.   We brainstormed N words and worked on our letter poems.

Snap word: do

Daily 5: We practiced work on writing and got to 10 minutes on the first day!  WOW!!  Way to go Kindergartners.  We talked about what it should look like and sound like during work on writing.  We should write quietly, write the whole time, use your brave spelling, stay in one spot and take care of our notebooks.

Handwriting:  We started our handwriting books today and worked on the letter A.
