January 5-9th 2015- Welcome Back!!!

Monday:

Math:  Today in math we learned some specific counting strategies.  We make sure to cross off the number and recheck.  We also practiced writing some of our teen numbers.

Writer's Workshop:  Today we talked about the purpose of writing in our journals.  We also talked about how journals are things that have really happened to us and we are writing them down because we want to remember them.  We can also write about how the event made us feel.

Language Arts/Phonics:  Today we learned about the first set of "h brothers.  We learned about the naughty brothers today.  They are naughty because when they are together they stick their tongue and make the "th" sound.  We brainstormed words that contain the th sound and then searched for them in a poem.  We enjoyed being able to stick out our tongues at the teachers today. :)

Social Studies:  Today we had our Time for Kids magazine where we learned about baby animals.
Tuesday:
Math:  Today in Math was iPad day.  While half the class worked on our splash math app, the others worked on a  roll and record math game.  We are doing a great job learning math facts and concepts with this great app that keeps track of our scores and challenges the students as the questions get harder with the more correct answers they get.

Writer's Workshop:  Today we reviewed remembering to use spaces in between our words to make it easier to read.  We all wrote about something that happened during Christmas break.

Language Arts/Phonics: Color word practice.  We will be learning how to spell color and number words and today we learned how to spell the color red.

Daily 5:  We also got new word work stations today, we were very excited to use them!!

Play rehearsal:  Today we got to go to the High School Auditorium to work and watch a play that the high school drama class writes and performs.  The name of the play was Dreamscape.  We enjoyed a lot of laughs and giggles.  We really enjoyed the play!

Wednesday:

Math: Today we played a ten frame math game.  We were shown a number using the ten frame on the smart board for only a few seconds and then using our own ten frame and chips we had to create the number we just saw. This is great practice in recognizing numbers quickly and realizing the patterns that if I have 8 squares filled in I only need 2 more to make 10.  We will be doing a lot of work with whole and parts these coming up weeks so this will be a great introduction.

Writer's Workshop:  Today we practiced using our brave spelling and adding a feeling word to our sentences.  We had time to write in our journals this morning.

WELCOME TO JOST'S DINER.....  Because the kids did their "holiday homework" we all were able to enjoy lunch in the classroom.  We really enjoyed the relaxing and quiet atmosphere!

Language Arts/Phonics:  Today we learned about the quiet brothers "Sh."  We call them the quiet brothers because when they are together they make the quiet sound.  We brainstormed sh words and found the in a poem call "She Sells Seashells by the Seashore."  We enjoyed trying to say the tongue twister.

Handwriting: Today we worked on the letter L.

Thursday:

Character Ed:  Today Mrs. Weninger came in with a project for Mrs. Harlan.  Mrs. Weninger asked the kids to write down 2 to 3 things that they liked about me their teacher.  They were very sweet and really filled my bucket. Mrs. Harlan has a project for these to be used in the spring, we are excited to see what she has planned.

Math:  Today in math we worked with 10 frames again with our partners.  We worked on making 10's by adding cubes.  We will be working with teen numbers next week.

Writer's Workshop:  Again today we practiced writing more that one or two sentences by adding sentence about a feeling word.  We are getting really good at using our brave spelling.  Many of us are still working on remembering spaces between words, it makes it easier for our readers to read!

Language Arts/Phonics:  Today we worked on spelling the color word "yellow."  Ask your child to sing the song to help them remember.  It's really cute. "y e l l o w spells yellow, y e l l o w spells yellow, like the early morning sun when the day has just begun y e l l o w spells yellow."

Friday:

We had a guest teacher Mrs Latour today because I was home with strep throat.  Watch for the warning signs, really sore throat and neck muscles.  We will be doing some more deep cleaning next week.

Math:  The students played math bingo with Mrs. Latour.

Technology:  Today they learned how to get to the websites where they can hear stories being read to them.  Click  HERE to try one out.

Language Arts/Phonics:  Today the students learned the snap word she and did their practice sheet.  Keep working on those snap words at home!!

Art:  Our lesson today was drawing the Cat in the Hat!!  Stop by and check them out in the hallway!

NEXT WEEK:  Monday AM, Tuesday and Thursday ALL DAY and Friday PM I will be out doing Q-comp observations again.  I am hoping to get my work done even faster so that I don't have to miss all of Thursday.  I appreciate your understanding and support for this incredible program we have at our school.  If you have questions please let me know.  Have a fabulous rest of your weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.
