Monday, February 29th

Math:

This morning we began a new unit.  We will begin with addition.  We start by learning one more/one less and then will work into larger numbers.  Today they played a game where they order the numbers from 1-10 and then one partner hides their eyes while the other partner takes out one of the numbers and hides it.  The partner covering their eyes now tries to guess what number is missing.  They had a blast with this game!  

Writing:  We continued using our brave spelling, spaces, period, and capital letters but also learned today that good writer's have pictures that match the words.  

Inside Recess:  We played in the computer lab with a partner today!

Storytime:  We read another chapter in Cookie the Deserted Puppy.

Reading/Phonics:  We started our next Reader's Theater today called We Like Fruit.

Word family: Today we worked on the an word family.

Daily 5:  I am finishing up on some assessments so we will be back to our guided reading book club soon!

Conferences:  I am looking forward to sharing all the great things your children have been up to!  We have conferences on Tuesday and Thursday.  If you do not remember your time or need to change it, please let me know!

Friday, January 26th

Storybook Reader!  We heard the story Big Chickens today!

Math: iPad math today-we played Slate Math.

Library:  We had our pictures taken with our "letter item" and checked out new books today!

Music today!

Storytime:  We read another chapter in the book Cookie the Deserted Puppy.

Thursday, January 25th

Math: We did more work on part/part/whole.

Writer's Workshop:  Today we continued writing stories using our brave spelling and adding feeling words.  

Character Education:  Mrs. Weninger came today for our last character ed class of the year.  

Read aloud:  Today we started the chapter book Cookie the Deserted Puppy.

Reading/Phonics: ad word family

Wednesday, January 24th

Math: We worked in small groups creating stories using part/part/whole.  We are getting better at this tough concept!

Writer's Workshop:  Today we worked on adding "feeling words" to our stories and adding more details!

Music Today!

Snap word game:  Today we played Cat and Mouse.  One friend hides the mouse under one of the snap words.  Then friends take turns guessing-saying words to try and find the mouse.  They LOVE this game!

Reading/Phonics:  Reviewed our reading strategies today and learned how to spell the color word PINK.

Assessments for conferences:  I will be doing assessments starting today for our upcoming conferences.  I will have your child bring home a few new books to have in their reading bags but we will not be having our normal guided reading book club.  Remind your children to use their strategies when they get stuck on a word.

Science: Life cycle of a frog this week

Tuesday, January 23rd

Math: Part/Part/Whole- we practiced by telling stories.  For example...I have 7 lollipops.  4 of them were red, how many were blue.  This is a very hard concept for some kids to grasp so doing simple stories such as this can help them better understand the concept.  We use a part/part/whole card as well as cubes to help us manipulate the numbers.  We also learned about our new Daily 3 math stations.  Ask your child what their favorite "blue bin" activity is.

Writer's Workshop:  We worked hard today remembering to use our brave spelling and write down the sounds we here.  I am so proud of the writers we have!  Keep it up!

Phy Ed Today!

Story time:  Each day after phyed or music we come back to the classroom and read a chapter or two from one of the Magic Tree House Books.  We are currently reading #7 Sunset of the Sabertooth.  We LOVE these books and always want to hear "just one more chapter!"  

Reading/Phonics:  Today we learned about the "ap" word family.  We also practiced writing ap words.

Reading Strategies:  We reviewed all our strategies and sang our song "I'm Learning to Read."

Art:  We worked on our snow globe project today- "If I lived in a snowglobe..."  These are turning out so cute!

Friday, January 19th

Math:  Today we played number bingo.  This is a great way to recognize teen and twenty numbers.  We LOVED this!

Reading Strategies:  We learned about Tryin' Lion- he tells us to be brave and keep trying!  We also learned our reading strategy song- I'm Learning to Read!
