Tuesday, January 23rd

Math: Part/Part/Whole- we practiced by telling stories.  For example...I have 7 lollipops.  4 of them were red, how many were blue.  This is a very hard concept for some kids to grasp so doing simple stories such as this can help them better understand the concept.  We use a part/part/whole card as well as cubes to help us manipulate the numbers.  We also learned about our new Daily 3 math stations.  Ask your child what their favorite "blue bin" activity is.

Writer's Workshop:  We worked hard today remembering to use our brave spelling and write down the sounds we here.  I am so proud of the writers we have!  Keep it up!

Phy Ed Today!

Story time:  Each day after phyed or music we come back to the classroom and read a chapter or two from one of the Magic Tree House Books.  We are currently reading #7 Sunset of the Sabertooth.  We LOVE these books and always want to hear "just one more chapter!"

Reading/Phonics:  Today we learned about the "ap" word family.  We also practiced writing ap words.

Reading Strategies:  We reviewed all our strategies and sang our song "I'm Learning to Read."

Art:  We worked on our snow globe project today- "If I lived in a snowglobe..."  These are turning out so cute!

Character Education:  Today Mrs. Weninger taught us about the red zone.  We have strong feelings when we get in the red zone like anger, aggressive, terrified.  Next week we will learn about strategies to help us get back to the green zone.

Storybook Reader:  Sarah Sailer read us the story The Monster who Lost his Mean.

Math:  We reviewed or part/part/whole and did calendar work.

Writer's Workshop:  Today we worked on coming up with ideas that we can write about.  We came up with a list of pets, family, friends, trips, special events, school.  I love watching the progression of their writing!  They are doing so well!  We have been working really hard on using our brave spelling and not relying on teachers to help.

Tuesday, January 16th

Math: We continued learning about part/part/whole.  Today instead of starting with the whole and breaking it into parts, we started with parts to find the whole.  This is a tough concept for some kids so the more practice we get the better.

Writing: Today we went through our folders and decided which ones were ready to be checked and sent home and added to the stories that needed more details.  We are getting so good at writing!  I love watching the progress!!

Phy Ed today!

Reading/Phonics:  Today we will be learning the PH brothers as well as performing our reader's theaters for our classmates.

Reading Strategy: Skippy Frog- he tells us to try skipping over the word and then go back and reread to figure out the word.

Friday, January 12th

We celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day today.  Many activities including:

Kid-friendly video, art project, I have a dream poster, mini book and a project using a brown and white egg.  We discussed what we noticed about the outside of the egg (they look different, they are different colors) then we predicted what the inside would look like.  We then discussed how just like the eggs look different on the outside, people look different as well but when we cracked them open they looked exactly the same- just like people!  This was such a fun activity and the kids make great connections!

Math: we did a dot to dot page about Martin Luther King Jr.

Color word: green

Character Education:  Mrs. Weninger taught us the yellow zone today.  There are many feelings we could be having when in the yellow zone.  Some examples we talked about were: frustrated, overwhelmed, silly, and excited.

Math: Today we started our study of "part/part/whole."  This is another way to help build number sense.  Today we found the various ways to make the number 6.  We will be studying and working with part/part/whole for a couple weeks.

Inside recess today- BRRR

Phy Ed today!

Snap word game:  We learned a new game today- it is similar to hangman but we start with a face and try to guess letters to make the snap word before Mrs. Jost erases the face.  Every time we guess a letter that is NOT in the word, I erase a part of the face such as the nose.  They LOVE this game and it is a great review of snap words.

Reading Strategy:  Today we learned "Chunky Monkey." When we get stuck on a word, look for chunks of the word you may know.

Color word: GREEN
