A Peek at Last Week

Math:  Last week in math we worked on place value.  We worked with teen numbers noticing that they are made up of 1 tens and then ones.  This was a tricky concept at first but with lots of practice playing games we understand it much better!  Tuesday was iPad math day!

Writing:  For Earth day on Wednesday we wrote about how we want to help save the earth.  Come check these out in the hallway.  We have also been continuing to write in our journals.

Phonics/Language Arts:  This week the blends were cr, gr, pr and tr.  We have also been continuing to work on segmenting words.  We have been playing games to review our snap words.  Our favorite is "cat and mouse!"

Reading:  This week was our reader's theatre week.  We got into groups of 3 and practiced reading our book with fluency and expression.  On Friday we presented to the class.

Science/Social/Art:  We had our time for kids magazine on Monday where we learned about an illustrator and how he got started in his career.  Next week in science we will be learning about plants and then planting a seed to watch it grow.  To boost this unit Jill's family brought in a beautiful daisy plant that we get to watch bloom. Thanks so much for this opportunity!!  In Art we made an "Earth man" and added our writing piece to it.

Other Happenings...

FRIDAY WAS HAT DAY!  WE PAID $1 OR MORE TO WEAR A HAT FOR THE DAY.  WE WERE ABLE TO RAISE $2000 FOR OUR MAPLE LAKE FAMILY IN NEED AFTER THEIR HOME BURNT DOWN.  ANOTHER REASON WHY WE HAVE SUCH AN AMAZING COMMUNITY!!

A Peek at Last Week...

Math: Last week in math we worked on number bonds.  We are getting really good at breaking apart and finding the missing number.  This week we used a number bond to help us solve story problems. On Monday we had ipad math.  We got to play splash math and build our jungles by answering math questions.

Writer's Workshop:  This week we worked on retelling a story and writing about our favorite parts.  We read the book Froggy Gets a Doggy and then wrote about our favorite parts.  We also continue to write in our journals every day.  We have been adding juicy details to make our stories more interesting.

Phonics/Language Arts:  This week we worked on the blends: sl, br, cr, and dr.  We brainstorm on the smart board and work on a practice sheet at our tables.  This week in reading we talked about compare and contrast.  We read a big book that compares children in the past to the present.  We learned the vocabulary: one room school house, past, present and future.  We brainstormed what we think school will look like in the future.  We watched for the signal words too and but to determine if we are comparing or contrasting.  We are getting really good at this!  On Friday we practiced writing CVC and CCVC words.  Some examples include: pig, crab, frog etc.

Segmenting:  We have been working really hard on segmenting words with blends.  It is tricky to remember to say each sound individually.  An example is the word frog.  When we segment we need to say all four sounds  /f/  /r/  /o/  /g/.  This would be a great game to play in the car with your child.

Other happenings this week:

Late Start/Irish Connections:  With our irish connections groups we made thank you cards to our Wright County Police Department for keeping us safe.

Storybook Reader:

Guest Readers: Emily read to the class and we had some 2nd graders come to read to our class!

For Fun...

A Peek from Last Week- April 6-10th

We had lunch in our classroom for working on and turning in your Spring Homework packet-way to go!!  Welcome to "Jost Diner." :)

Math: This week in math we were introduced to some new vocabulary: weight, heavier, lighter,  area and capacity. We began the week talking about weight and how to know if something weighs more than something else.  We used a balance and made estimates using a variety of objects.  Then we used our balance to see how close we were.  We also learned about capacity.  We used the words higher and lower capacity as we filled containers with uncooked rice.  We made estimates and discussed how you know if something has a higher or lower capacity.  We also talked about area.  We estimated how many one inch squares it would take to cover up a rectangle on the smart board.  Then we had to decide if we used smaller squares if we would need more or less to fill the rectangle.  I was very proud of the math talk and strategies they used to come up with their answers!  Awesome!!

Writing:  We are continuing to work on our journals and book reviews.

Phonics/Language Arts: The blends we learned this week were: cl, fl,gl,pl.  We were also working on comparing and contrasting for reading.  We also practiced our snap words by playing ZAP!

Handwriting:  We worked on the letters d and e.

Technology:  This week we worked on typing number words and then going back and changing the size of the print.

Art:  We made rainbows to hang from our ceiling.  It officially looks like spring now.

We had storybook reader this week!
